Studio FAQ
How big is the recording room? The recording room is approximately 12ft2. It has been professionally treated using 14 large acoustic panels for sound absorption, which makes it an ideal space for vocal and instrument work. What do you record onto? We use a ProTools LE 7.3 system running on an Intel-based Mac through a Digi002 Rack digital recording interface, which enables us to record up to 8 tracks simultaneously (ideal for drum kits and small ensembles, etc.) What microphones to you use? We use a range of different mics depending on the application, but we tend to rely mostly on AudioTechnica for our studio and live recording mics. What effects do you have? We have a wide range of plug-ins available in ProTools to cater for the most demanding effects needs. We also have restoration tools, allowing us to remove excess noise, clicks and pops from reels, tapes and vinyl without sacrificing the integrity of the original audio source. Can you put audio onto CD from different formats? We are able to transfer and master audio, using a variety of processes including advanced noise reduction, to CD from vinyl, cassette, minidisc, DAT, tape reels, MP3 and microcassette. Do you do duplication? We provide a range of duplication services for audio and data CDs, as well as for cassettes. We can also provide labels or black and full-colour on body print. Please contact us for individual quotes. Are you able to do location recordings? Yes, we have a portable ProTools system that we use for location recordings, which is suitable for choirs, ensembles, bands, conferences, etc., and can be set up discreetly for live performances, so we are able to record just about anywhere! What are your rates for studio time? Our basic rate for the studio is £25 and hour + VAT. We do, however, have special rates for musicians - our day rate (7 hours) is £150 inclusive, plus a CD copy for each band member, whilst our half day rate (4 hours) is £85 inclusive, plus a CD copy for each band member. What is the availability of the studio? The studio is typically open 5 days a week from Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm), although we are happy to open the studio on Saturdays. Please contact us to discuss your requirments. What gear to you record through? We route the mic inputs through our Soundcraft LX7II desk and our Drawmer compressor (as and when required), then through the Digi002 Rack into ProTools LE 7.3, which runs on our Intel-based Apple Mac. Is there anything we need to bring with us, not including our instruments? Spare strings, spare plectrums, spare batteries and spare drum sticks (however, if you do forget anything, we stock a range of instrument accessories in our shop). You will also need to bring any effects that are essential to the sound and a copy of your lyrics is always recommended. What is parking like? There is ample free parking next to the shop, allowing easy loading/unloading of equipment. Do I need to provide my own backing tracks? If you already have backing tracks that you are familiar with, you are more than welcome to bring them in. We are able to source almost any backing track and have an extensive collection in the studio already. Please contact us to discuss you needs prior to the session. How many tracks can we do in a day? This depends on a number of variables. However, if you are using pre-recorded backing tracks, we should be able to record an entire album in a day, including editing and mastering. For bands, 3 tracks is a good estimate, although this also depends on the amount of post-production that you require to ensure a good mix. Of course, the length of the tracks and the number of takes you require to get an accurate performance must also be taken into account. If you have any other questions, or would like some more information, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be glad to help. |
